1. does punching bag training at home make sense?

A punching bag is always there.
It's like your personal kung fu master in the morning.

Your stress killer at lunchtime (when the neighbors have parked in your driveway again).
And your faithful training partner in the evening.

Whether you want to switch off after a long day at work or you don't want your children to take their anger out on their siblings after a stressful day at nursery or school - the punching bag is ready and waiting for your next round.

As well as reducing stress, you also train your strength and endurance. Boxing is effective cardio.

If your punching bag is at home, you have your fitness partner close by. This means you don't have to travel to the gym or a boxing club every time you want to do your boxing training and you're not tied to opening times or the weather.

If your punching bag is always in sight at home and not hanging up in the far corner of the house, then it's a real invitation to train!
The effort of getting ready for training is COMPLETELY eliminated.

And the best thing is: you don't even have to get dressed in sportswear.
If the boxing gloves are always within easy reach next to the punching bag, you can even quickly box out your stress in a suit or evening dress :))

2 Which punching bag is right for you? Size, weight & target group at a glance

It depends entirely on who uses it and how.

The most important questions:

  • What do you want to train? (Strength, endurance, technique, kicks?)

  • Who should use the punching bag? (Children, adults, everyone?)

  • How heavy can it be? (suspension, mobility, safety)

Punching bag at home for beginners

  • Lighter punching bag (15-20 kg), approx. 70 cm long

  • ideal for technique training & cardio

  • Soft filling - can also be used without gloves

  • not too light! Otherwise it will swing too much

👉 Tip: No punching bag under 15 kg for adults!

Beginner punching bags are often a little shorter and softer - ideal for technique training and a secure feeling when starting out. It is also often the case that you first want to try out whether boxing training is fun at all - or you have just started boxing training in the club and want to train at home at the same time.

A good beginner's model is around 15 to 20 kg - depending on your body weight.
The heavier you are, the more resistance you need.

Tip: Many people prefer to start with a softer bag that can be used without gloves. This is ideal for children, teenagers or adults with sensitive wrists.

Cardio vs. strength training

Do you want to hit lots of fast combinations to improve your endurance? Then a lighter, agile bag (approx. 15-18 kg) will do.

If, on the other hand, you want to work on your impact force, you need a model with more counterweight - i.e. 20 kg or more.

The rule of thumb: the more power you put in, the more stable your opponent should be.

Punching bag for advanced & professionals

Do you want to train properly - with power, technique and discipline? Then you need more weight (from approx. 20 kg) and a harder filling

Boxing gloves are also an absolute must here.
Why?
The punching bag is filled harder and hits harder. With boxing gloves you reduce your risk of injury.

The length also plays a role.
A length of 70-100 cm is sufficient for classic boxing training with the hands.

If you want to practise kicks (e.g. kickboxing or Muay Thai), you need a longer bag of 100 cm or more so that you can practise all techniques properly.

Punching bag for children (4-12 years)

  • Light & soft: approx. 6-10 kg

  • Height-adjustable & softly filled (preferably with fabric!)

  • Beware of cheap models with rubber granulate - this becomes hard and unyielding over time

👉 Our junior punching bag is designed so that you can adjust the weight individually - ideal for growing children.

The most important thing here is:
The weight must not be too high, otherwise training can become frustrating or even dangerous.

Punching bag for young people aged 12 and over

(or 10-year-olds who really want to work off their energy ;-)

Similar to adult beginners: usually 15-20 kg - depending on strength and height. If in doubt, please ask us.

Important:
When choosing a children's or youth punching bag, the filling is crucial. Most of the cheaper punching bag models (Decathlon & Co.) are filled with rubber granules.

The big disadvantage of rubber granules compared to textile as a punching bag filling is that the material becomes very dense over time and you end up with a hard, inflexible bag .
Textile-filled models remain pleasantly elastic, which reduces the strain on wrists, elbows and shoulders.
If your child's health is important to you, buy a punching bag with textile filling for your child!

3. is there THE punching bag for the whole family?

More and more families are asking us whether there is a punching bag that adults and children can use together.
Our answer: Yes, there is. And we call it the family punching bag.

If both parents and children want to train with it, we recommend it:

A 1 m long kickboxing bag for beginners weighing approx. 20 kg

Why?

  • Soft enough for children

  • Sturdy enough for adults

  • Adults have enough counterweight

  • The length is also sufficient for kicks

  • Can be hung in such a way that everyone can cope with it

This is our most flexible punching bag: it has a softer filling than a professional punching bag and is therefore also suitable for children and young people, but at the same time offers sufficient weight so that adults can also train effectively. A punching bag with a harder filling would not be ideal for children as they would not be able to move it well.

Tip on hanging height:

Hang the punching bag so that its upper edge is about 10 cm above the height of the adult. Then it will fit both adults and children and you can train well together with your child.

A shorter punching bag often hangs too high if it is hung in a way that is suitable for adults, so that children cannot box well on it.

Alternative:
You can also choose a 70 cm long beginner's punching bag and adjust the suspension rope flexibly - depending on who is currently training. With a sufficiently long rope, you can adjust the knot and hang the punching bag higher or lower.

The disadvantage of this solution is that you have to readjust the knot each time and cannot train with your child at the same time.

Important:

A junior punching bag weighing 8 kg is not suitable for adults - even for boxing beginners. It is too light and swings out too much.

There are certainly more options for creative solutions - let us know if you have any ideas or are still unsure which punching bag is best for your family training.

4 How and where do I hang up a punching bag at home?

The good news is that hanging a punching bag is easier than you think. And you have lots of options - depending on how your home is built.

How to hang up?

Depending on your taste, you can hang the punching bag on the ceiling, on the wall with a special wall bracket or - our tip for non-load-bearing ceilings or walls - on a wall bars with a pull-up bar.

You can find complete instructions for hanging punching bags with stylish hanging tips in our article:
"Hanging punching bags: Step-by-step instructions for ceiling and wall mounting"

Where to hang?

Perhaps you already have an idea of which room you would prefer to hang the punching bag in?
The following considerations can help you choose a room.

Why hide the punching bag?
Stylish statement & always to hand. Our models are not just training equipment, but real Marilyn Monroes among punching bags.
Whether industrial loft or minimalist lifestyle apartment - they adapt to your interior and make a statement.

Living room
A punching bag at home is an ornament for the home - it can accentuate a room or even divide it up.

Home office
Power break for new energy, focus and variety.

Children's room
Exercise and fun in one.

Hallway

The advantage: you can't get past the punching bag without knocking it to the side - and you're right in the middle of a mini-training session.

Home gym
Perfect for your workout setup. Perfect combination with dumbbells, mat & co.

How much space does the punching bag need?

Approx. 1.5 m distance from walls & furniture - so that the bag can swing freely.

How high or low should punching bags hang at home?

Optimum height for classic boxing training: the top edge of the punching bag is 10 cm higher than the boxer's height.

The right height for your punching bag also depends on what you want to use it for.

Classic boxing training mainly requires arm work. You should be able to work the bag from the center down.

For Thai boxing or kickboxing, you need the entire length, and a punching bag 120 cm long hung lower is recommended.

You can hang your punching bag as low as you like using a rope or chains, but at some point you will reach the point where the punching bag starts to swing a lot if the chain or rope is too long.

A punching bag spring between the ceiling hook and the rope/chain dampens the vibration somewhat.

5 Which material is the best? - Stylish and functional - is that possible?

Yes, a punching bag doesn't just have to be functional, it can also be a statement piece. Not a bulky PVC monster, but a classy piece of training equipment that blends seamlessly into your home.

Genuine leather vs. artificial leather

Genuine leather:

  • Robust and durable

  • Pleasant feel

  • Develops patina instead of cracks

  • Still looks good even after years

Synthetic leather /PVC:

  • Cheaper

  • Tears more easily

  • Not very pleasant for the skin

  • Often found in fitness studios

  • Often harmful in production

Many cheap models crack over time - because the material is not made for constant swinging and banging.

Choose a punching bag with a natural, comfortable surface if you want to use it regularly - and are thinking about training barefoot or without gloves.

Children and beginners in particular benefit from the soft, skin-friendly material.

We recommend real leather for the home - not only because it is more robust, but also because it simply looks better.

If you buy a punching bag that looks stylish and can hang in the middle of your home, it is guaranteed to be used more often than an ugly plastic or artificial leather punching bag on iron chains. The PVC monster is also more likely to be hidden in the basement/hobby room or similar, and you then have to go down to the basement for a training session.
(A customer once wrote that we were the only ones whose punching bags didn't look like a torture chamber :) ) A few punches on the punching bag hanging right in front of you are even easier than rolling out a yoga mat.

6. what else do I need for boxing training at home apart from the punching bag?

If you're a beginner, you don't need much:

  • A well-fixed punching bag

  • Comfortable sportswear

  • Possibly bandages and/or boxing gloves

  • A training mat for additional exercises

  • A small box playlist with motivating music

Advanced users may get further with these things:

  • Skipping rope

  • Mirror (for technology analysis)

  • Boxing apps or online training

  • Boxing dummy or claws for partner training

Boxing gloves or without?

Whether you need boxing gloves depends on your punching bag and your training intensity.
With lightweight punching bags with a soft textile filling, you can also train without gloves - especially for short sessions or as a beginner.

We recommend boxing gloves or at least bandages for more intensive training or for heavier loads. This protects your wrists and ankles.

7 Conclusion: Which punching bag is the right one for your home?

The ideal punching bag for your home is not the heaviest, biggest or most expensive - but the one that suits you and your everyday life.

Think about it carefully:

  • Who trains with the punching bag?

  • Where should it hang?

  • How regularly do you want to train?

  • And: do you want to have to get it out every time, or do you want it to match your home?

A punching bag is more than just a piece of sports equipment.
It's an anti-stress tool.
A training partner.
A piece of healthy exercise in the middle of everyday life.
And with the right model, it's also a real statement in terms of interior design.
👉 You don't need an outfit, an appointment or motivation - just your punching bag in sight.

Then it's time to hit it. Switch off. Stay fit :))
