Does it make sense to do punching bag training at home?

    There's always a punching bag.
It's like having your own personal kung fu master first thing in the morning.

Your stress reliever at lunchtime (when the neighbors have once again blocked your driveway).
And your faithful workout partner in the evening.

Whether you want to unwind after a long day at work or keep your kids from taking out their frustration on their siblings after a stressful day at preschool or school —the punching bag is ready and waiting for your next round.

In addition to relieving stress, you'll also build strength and endurance. Boxing is an effective form of cardio.

If you have a punching bag at home, you have your fitness partner right at your fingertips. That means you don't have to drive to the gym or a boxing club every time you want to train, and you're not tied to opening hours or the weather.

If your punching bag is always in plain sight at home—and not hanging in the farthest corner of the house—then it practically invites you to work out!
You don't have to go through the hassle of getting ready to work out AT ALL.

And the best part: You don't even have to change into workout clothes.
If your boxing gloves are always within reach next to the punching bag, you can quickly punch out your stress even while wearing a suit or an evening gown :))

A punching bag at home? Just go for it.

Which punching bag is right for you? An overview of size, weight, and target audience

It all depends on who uses it and how.

    The most important questions:

    • What do you want to train? (Strength, endurance, technique, kicks?)

    • Who is the punching bag intended for? (Children, adults, everyone?)

    • How heavy can it be? (Suspension, mobility, safety)

Punching Bag for Beginners at Home

    • Lighter punching bag (15–20 kg), about 70 cm long

    • Perfect for technical training & cardio

    • Softly padded—can be used even without gloves

    • Don't make it too light! Otherwise, it will swing too much.

👉 Tip: No punching bags weighing less than 15 kg for adults!

Beginner punching bags are often a bit shorter and softer —ideal for working on technique and feeling confident when you’re just starting out. Often, people want to try it out first to see if boxing is even fun—or they’ve just started boxing at a gym and want to train at home as well.

A good entry-level model weighs about 15 to 20 kg —depending on your body weight.
The heavier you are, the more resistance you need.

Tip: Many people prefer to start with a softer bag that can be used even without gloves. This is ideal for children, teens, or adults with sensitive wrists.

    Cardio vs. Strength Training

Do you want to throw lots of quick combinations to improve your endurance? Then a lighter, more agile bag (about 15–18 kg) will do.

If, on the other hand, you want to work on your punching power, you'll need a model with more counterweight—that is, 20 kg or more.

The rule of thumb: The more power you put into it, the more stable your opponent should be.

Punching Bag for Intermediate and Advanced Boxers & Professionals

Do you want to train seriously—with power, technique, and discipline? Then you'll need more weight (starting at about 20 kg) and a firmer filling.

Also, boxing gloves are an absolute must here.
    Why?
The punching bag is filled with harder material and delivers a heavier punch. Wearing boxing gloves reduces your risk of injury.

    Length is also a factor.
For classic boxing training with your hands, a length of 70–100 cm is sufficient.

If you want to practice kicking (e.g., kickboxing or Muay Thai), you'll need a longer bag—at least 100 cm—so you can practice all the techniques effectively.

Punching Bag for Children (Ages 4–12)

    • Lightweight & soft: approx. 6–10 kg

    • Height-adjustable & softly padded (preferably with fabric!)

    • Be careful with inexpensive models made of rubber granules—they become hard and inflexible over time.

👉 Our junior punching bag is designed so you can adjust the weight to suit your needs —ideal for growing kids.

The most important thing to remember here is:
The weight shouldn't be too heavy, otherwise the workout can become frustrating or even dangerous.

Punching bag for teens ages 12 and up

    — or 10-year-olds who want to really burn off some energy. ;-)

Similar to adult beginners: usually 15–20 kg —depending on strength and height. If you're not sure, feel free to ask us.

    Important:
When choosing a punching bag for children or teens, the filling is crucial. Most of the less expensive punching bag models (Decathlon, etc.) are filled with rubber granules.

Compared to fabric, rubber granules used as punching bag filling have the major drawback that the material compacts significantly over time, resulting in a hard, inflexible bag .
Fabric-filled models remain pleasantly elastic, which reduces the strain on wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
If your child’s health is important to you, buy a fabric-filled punching bag for your child!

Is there ONE punching bag for the whole family?

More and more families are asking us if there’s a punching bag that adults and children can use together.
Our answer: Yes, there is. And we call it the family punching bag.

If both parents and children want to use it for exercise, we recommend:

Our KICK-STARTER punching bag for children, teens, and adult beginners, weighing approximately 20 kg

    Why?

    • Soft enough for children

    • Sturdy enough for adults

    • Adults have enough counterbalance

    • It's long enough for kicks, too

    • Can be hung in a way that works for everyone

    • If the punching bag is too heavy—for example, for children:
In addition to the fabric filling, the punching bag contains an inner bag filled with 5 kg of fine gravel. This gravel bag can be easily removed (instructions are included). This immediately makes the punching bag 5 kg lighter.

This is our most versatile punching bag: It’s filled with softer material than a professional punching bag, making it well-suited for children and teens, yet it’s heavy enough for adults to train effectively as well. A punching bag filled with harder material wouldn’t be ideal for children, since they wouldn’t be able to swing it around easily.

    Tip on hanging height:

Hang the punching bag so that its top edge is about 10 cm above the height of an adult. That way, it’s suitable for both adults and children, and you can train together with your child.

A shorter punching bag often hangs too high when set at a height suitable for adults, making it difficult for children to punch it properly.

    Alternative:
You can also choose a 70-cm-long beginner’s punching bag and adjust the hanging rope as needed —depending on who’s training at the time. With a rope that’s long enough, you can adjust the knot to hang the punching bag higher or lower.

The downside of this solution is that you have to readjust the knot every time and can't exercise at the same time as your child.

    Important:

A junior punching bag weighing 8 kg is not suitable for adults—including beginners—because it is too light and swings too widely.

There are surely even more possibilities for creative solutions —feel free to let us know if you have any ideas or are still unsure which punching bag is best for your family's workout.

Our dog joined in the training too—he really enjoyed it ;-)

How and where do I hang a punching bag at home?

The good news: Hanging a punching bag is easier than you think. And you have plenty of options—depending on the layout of your home.

How do I hang it up?

Depending on your preference, you can hang the punching bag from the ceiling, on the wall using a special wall mount, or—our tip for non-load-bearing ceilings or walls—on a wall bar with a pull-up bar.

You can find a complete guide to hanging a punching bag, including stylish hanging tips, in our article:
“Hanging a Punching Bag: A Step-by-Step Guide to Ceiling and Wall Mounting”

    Where should I hang it?

Maybe you already have an idea of which room you'd like to hang the punching bag in?
The following considerations can help you choose the right room.

    Why hide the punching bag?
A stylish statement—and always within reach. Our models aren’t just workout equipment—they’re the Marilyn Monroes of punching bags.
Whether it’s an industrial loft or a minimalist lifestyle apartment, they blend seamlessly with your interior and make a statement.

    Living Room
A punching bag at home is a real gem—it can really accentuate a room or even serve as a room divider.

    Working from Home
A power break for renewed energy, focus, and a change of pace.

Kids' Room: Exercise and fun all in one.

    Hallway

The advantage: You can't walk past the punching bag without knocking it to the side—and just like that, you're right in the middle of a mini-workout.

Home Gym—Perfect for your workout setup. Pairs perfectly with dumbbells, a mat, and more.

How much space does the punching bag take up?

Keep a distance of about 1.5 m from walls and furniture—so the bag can swing freely.

How high or low should punching bags be hung at home?

Ideal height for classic boxing training: The top edge of the punching bag is 10 cm higher than the boxer's height.

The right height for your punching bag also depends on what you plan to use it for.

In traditional boxing training, the focus is mainly on arm work. You should be able to work the bag from the middle down.

For Thai boxing or kickboxing, you'll need the full length, and a low-hanging punching bag that's 120 cm long is recommended.

You can hang your punching bag at any height using a rope or chain, but there comes a point where the punching bag starts to swing wildly if the chain or rope is too long.

A punching bag spring between the ceiling hook and the rope or chain helps dampen the swinging motion somewhat.

Which material is best? – Stylish and functional – is that possible?

Yes! A punching bag doesn't just have to be functional—it can also be a statement piece. Not some clunky PVC monster, but a sleek piece of workout equipment that blends seamlessly into your home.

    Genuine Leather vs. Faux Leather

    Genuine leather:

    • Sturdy and durable

    • Pleasant feel at impact

    • Develops a patina instead of cracks

    • It still looks good even after years

    Faux leather / PVC:

    • Cheaper

    • Tears more easily

    • Not very gentle on the skin

    • Commonly found in gyms

    • Often harmful during production

Many cheap models burst over time —because the material isn't designed to withstand constant swinging and hitting.

Choose a punching bag with a natural, comfortable surface if you plan to use it regularly—and if you're thinking about training barefoot or without gloves from time to time.

Children and beginners, in particular, benefit from a soft, skin-friendly material.

For home use, we recommend genuine leather—not only because it's more durable, but also because it simply looks better.

If you buy a punching bag that looks stylish and can be hung right in the middle of your apartment, you’re guaranteed to use it more often than an ugly plastic or faux-leather punching bag hanging from iron chains. That PVC monster tends to get hidden away in the basement, hobby room, or somewhere similar, and then you have to make a special trip down to the basement just to work out.
(One customer once wrote that we’re the only ones whose punching bags don’t look like something out of a torture chamber :) ) Throwing a few punches at the punching bag hanging right in front of you is even easier than rolling out a yoga mat.

Besides a punching bag, what else do I need for boxing training at home?

If you're a beginner, you don't need much:

    • A securely fastened punching bag

    • Comfortable athletic wear

    • Possibly wraps and/or boxing gloves

    • An exercise mat for supplementary exercises

    • A short boxing playlist with motivational music

Advanced users might find these tips helpful:

    • Jump rope

    • Spiegel (on technical analysis)

    • Boxing Apps or Online Workouts

    • Boxing dummy or focus mitts for partner training

    Boxing gloves or not?

Whether you need boxing gloves depends on your punching bag and the intensity of your workout.
With lightweight punching bags that have soft fabric filling, you can sometimes train without gloves —especially during short sessions or if you're a beginner.

For more intense training or when using heavier weights, we recommend boxing gloves or at least wrist wraps. This protects your wrists and knuckles.

Conclusion: Which punching bag is the right one for home use?

The ideal punching bag for your home isn't the heaviest, biggest, or most expensive one—it's the one that fits you and your daily routine.

    Think carefully about this:

    • Who works out with a punching bag?

    • Where should it be hung?

    • How often do you want to work out?

    • And: Do you want to have to force yourself to take it out every time, or should it fit right in at your place?

A punching bag is more than just a piece of sports equipment.
It’s a tool for relieving stress.
    A workout partner.
A bit of healthy exercise right in the middle of your everyday life.
And with the right model, it can also make a real statement when it comes to home decor.
👉 You don’t need an outfit, an appointment, or motivation—just your punching bag within sight.

Then it's time to: Go all out. Unwind. Stay in shape.
