Forest kindergarten has many benefits. Spending every day outdoors in the forest not only boosts children’s immune systems but also fosters their self-confidence, creativity, and connection to nature. But how does that work in the fall and winter, in all kinds of weather—wind, rain, cold, and mud? Forest Kindergarten in Fall and Winter
In Germany, it rains an average of 126–132 days a year, especially in the fall and winter. Rain and mud are no obstacle at the forest kindergarten: the children still play outside every day. Most children even love playing in the mud. Of course, this comes with a high risk of catching a cold. To prevent illness and hypothermia, one thing is especially important: the right clothing and gear.
The Right Equipment
Both the clothing and the equipment for the forest kindergarten must be durable and sustainable to withstand even the messiest adventures. That means warm winter clothing, including ski underwear, as well as waterproof rain gear and tried-and-true all-weather clothing—such as our kids’ leather pants.

In addition to the right clothes, a forest child also needs a small backpack to carry essential items each day. It should hold a small sleeping pad, a water bottle, a lunchbox, a small towel, and, if necessary, a change of clothes.
